Barley Balance

®

Barley Balance is a concentrate of barley beta-glucan soluble fiber. Barley Balance is obtained from Non-GMO Canadian barley grains using a patented air process without the use of chemicals or enzymes. Barley Balance (with minimum 23% beta-glucan and 37% total dietary fiber) is an off-white, free flowing powder with a smooth and neutral taste, and excellent dispersibility.

WHAT IS BARLEY BETA-GLUCAN?

Beta-glucan is a water-soluble dietary fiber naturally occurring in the cell walls of different foods, predominantly in barley. Barley beta-glucan is comprised of linear chains of D-glucose monomers linked by β-(1-3) and β-(1-4) bonds. This natural structure, along with the high molecular weight and solubility, allows barley beta-glucan to produce diverse biological effects in the body such as lowering cholesterol, regulating blood glucose concentrations, and maintaining a healthy digestive system. These health benefits are accepted by Health Canada, the US FDA and EFSA Europe, among others.

We use an innovative processing technology called Air-current Assisted Particle Separation (ACAPS). This patented process is named after the apparatus we use to extract the beta-glucan from non-GMO barley grains.

The ACAPS technology aids in the separation of the beta-glucan fibre from other particles, allowing for high concentration beta-glucan in our products. This clean technology does not use solvents, enzymatic hydrolysis or chemical modifications. It also therefore does not produce any wastewater, and is energy efficient making Barley Balance one of the most sustainable fiber ingredients produced.

The result is a naturally occurring and extracted barley beta-glucan fiber that you can feel confident adding into your products.

How Barley Balance is different from other fibers?

Barley Balance beta-glucan concentrate is a real fiber extracted from real barley grains, unlike many name brand fibers that are not naturally occurring. Fibers such as “wheat dextrin”, “resistant dextrin”, “maltodextrin”, “resistant maltodextrin”, are starches that have been chemically treated to become resistant to digestion, but are labelled as “soluble fiber”, “soluble corn fibers”, “soluble vegetable fibres” or “dietary fiber”.

Although these fibers have scientific studies that show some possible health benefits, those studies are not sufficient to have approved health claims by Government Agencies such as Health Canada, the US FDA and EFSA Europe, among others.

 

In contrast, barley Beta-glucan, the nutraceutical component in Barley Balance, has been accepted by the scientific community, and approved by the main regulatory agencies worldwide to lower cholesterol, regulate blood glucose concentrations and help maintain a healthy digestive system.
